The white travertine terraces extend down the hillside in layers, each one holding warm mineral water that has been flowing from the same thermal springs for millennia. The calcium carbonate deposits build up over years into the formations you see — stepped pools in shades of white, cream, and pale blue. You can walk through the terraces barefoot and paddle in the pools, which stay at a consistent warm temperature even in the cooler months. Swimwear is essential.
- Hierapolis, the ancient Greco-Roman city that sits at the top of the terraces, adds a different dimension to the day. You are walking through the ruins of a settlement that was already old when the Romans expanded it in the 2nd century AD. The theatre, the necropolis, and the temple ruins cover a large area. Your guide provides context throughout the three hours of free exploration time, but the site is large enough to reward independent wandering if you prefer.
- Cleopatra's Pool — where Roman-era columns lie submerged in warm thermal water that you can swim through — is available for an additional entrance fee. It is one of the more unusual swimming experiences available in Turkey and worth the extra cost if your schedule allows.
