Highlights

  • Iztuzu Beach is a 7-kilometre stretch of coastline where the freshwater of the Dalyan River meets the sea. It is one of the last active nesting sites in the Mediterranean for the Loggerhead Caretta-Caretta sea turtle, and as a result the beach operates under strict environmental regulations. A section of the beach is off-limits during nesting season, but the rest is open for swimming. You may see turtles in the water near the shore, particularly in the morning hours.
  • The Dalyan mud baths are a different kind of attraction entirely. The thermal springs here produce mud with a high mineral content, and the tradition is to coat yourself entirely before wading into the adjacent thermal pool and then rinsing off in the river. The experience is messy, social, and surprisingly fun. One practical note: remove any silver jewellery before you enter — the sulphur compounds in the mud will darken silver quickly and the discolouration is difficult to reverse.
  • The river section of the tour involves a boat journey through the Dalyan Delta, passing ancient Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff face. These date to the 4th century BC and are part of the archaeological site of Caunos. The combination of the river landscape, the ruins visible from the water, and the bird life in the delta reeds makes this section as interesting as either of the headline attractions.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove my jewellery before the mud baths?

Yes. Remove silver jewellery before entering the mud — the minerals will darken it and the effect is hard to undo. Gold is generally fine.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, a camera, and water shoes if you have them (not essential but useful on the beach).

Are children welcome?

Yes. Children aged 7 to 12 pay a reduced rate and infants up to 6 are free.
