- Cleopatra Island sits in the middle of Gokova Bay, roughly an hour by boat from Marmaris. The story most guides will tell you is that Mark Antony shipped sand from Egypt because Cleopatra was unhappy with the local beach. The sand does look different from anything else on the Turkish coast — pale, fine, and with an almost metallic shimmer when wet. Whether or not the legend is accurate, it has earned the beach protection as a National Conservation Area, which means you cannot remove even a handful of it, and you are not allowed to lay towels directly on the sand.
- The island has more than just the beach. Roman-era ruins are scattered throughout — an amphitheatre, a temple, and the foundations of structures from the Hellenistic and Byzantine periods. A few hours here gives you time to swim, dry off, and walk through history without feeling rushed. The water around the island is clear enough to see the bottom at considerable depth, which makes the four included swim stops on the way out and back genuinely enjoyable rather than perfunctory.
- Lunch is a BBQ served onboard at anchor, with unlimited soft drinks throughout the day. The total boat time is roughly seven hours, including travel to and from Gokova Bay.
